We all know the familiar .com, .org, .net, .gov and all the different country code Internet domain extensions. Recently a whole bunch of new generic Top-level Domains (gTLDs) have become available, like .mobi, .porn, .finance and so on. For photo and photography related websites there are a few new cool extensions: .pic, .pictures, .photo, .photos and .photography (as far as I know at this time). The more obvious cool domain names with these extensions have already been claimed. I think I was lucky to scoop up this one for my site which makes for an awesome URL: worldtravel.photo
Now I have had a discussion with a true SEO guru (that’s someone who is an expert in search engine, i.e. Google, optimisation) who claimed that these weird extension are no good and will lead to no better web exposure. People will not take you seriously if you do not have a .com domain. Well, other experts say that it doesn’t make a difference and personally I think it looks pretty cool! Don’t you agree?
The only decision to make is whether to put the www. prefix in front of it or not. It would make the URL look more familiar to those who are unaware of these new extensions. But I think the familiar prefix is ugly and usually absolutely unnecessary. What do you think? Let me know by leaving a comment.
The big question of course is, will it actually bring more and better exposure? We will see.. The fact that you are reading this should be a good indicator. 🙂
